7 Why make presidential election campaigning complicated when you can just say: ”Vote like this for a better future”
8 Livingston, a poster for Partido Patriota, with candidate Otto Perez Molina, a School of Americas-trained retired general responsible for deaths in the Guatemalan civil war. His policy of Mano Dura, fighting criminality with hard hands, almost made him president some months ago.
9 The winner in that election was Alvaro Colom, here shown on a poster thrown on the ground and littered. I met people who had the same poster on the walls of their houses, hoping that he would be the leader the country needs.
10 But most people have an idea of who the real leader of Guatemala is, the big companies. I can’t get over how everything can be bought for money. There doesn’t seem to be a single building in any town that is not sponsored. On the steps it says: ”How great it is to pay per second” ”The best chip is Tigo’s”.
