Spoiling your holiday, here’s Rigoberta

This is Rigoberta Menchú, a Nobel peace prize winner and a presidential candidate in Guatemala’s next election. I read her book titled I, Rigoberta before going to Guatemala in 2004. She is, like a majority of all Guatemalans, part of the indigenous population that is being oppressed by a corrupt government. Not like that many Guatemalans, she is very conscious and proud of being indigenous. She is a remarkable woman who has been through a lot, I’m not going to list it all here.
In 2055, Guatemalans and others alike might hopefully say: Can’t believe that 50 years ago, our president-to-be was mistaken for a street vendor and denied access to a fancy Cancún hotel, where she was going to be interviewed. Imagine that! She is pretty famous in Central America. But a woman wearing traditional indigenous clothes is not welcome in fancy hotels, and she was steered away from her own interview because of her appearance. Source: El Pais
The hotel workers probably had the tourists’ best in mind, those walking vendors can really spoil a holiday, right?
